Elkhart Lake, WI --- Wisconsin is more than just the home state of Autocon's Chris McMurry, it also the home of arguably the best road racing course in North America. Road America is often described as the Spa of our continent and it continually is at the top of race tracks on the ALMS schedule. The four mile course through the wooded hills and valleys of Elkhart Lake challenges both drivers and cars and the driver combination of McMurry and Bryan Willman were able to get the most out their efforts both in qualifying and the race to put down a superb performance to finish 5th in class and 8th overall in the Sunday main event. Track time was limited as team driver Tony Burgess took over testing duties on Thursday and was faced with an overheating transmission throughout the day. This issue was solved when Intersport Racing kindly lent a critical part to resolve the issue. Then McMurry and Willman shared the remaining practice sessions leading up to the 20-minute qualifying session Friday afternoon. With McMurry behind the wheel the Autocon Lola was wheeled to a superb 4th in class and 7th overall for the starting grid for Saturday's main event. McMurry lined up for the start of the main event and it was a classic Elkhart drag race at the green flag. The power and straight line speed allowed Chris to negotiate past other prototypes as he put in near qualifying lap times. An early full course yellow jumbled the field and at the restart the Autocon entry moved up to a very proud 4th overall and 2nd in the P1 category. From then to the first scheduled pit stop the was constant action in the prototype divisions with McMurry involved in several tight dices and gaining a ton of TV air time for the JeanRichard sponsored entry. Chris remained on the lead lap throughout his ironman like stint that took him very close to the two hour marker, maintaining 4th in class. The final full course yellow allowed a driver change to Willman but the timing of the yellow put #12 back one lap on the scoring charts. The final stint saw Bryan lower his times on each and every lap although he dropped to 5th in class after being passed by Johnny Molwem to finish 8th overall at the checker. "We had a really good race, absent of any serious issues with the car throughout. This was the best car I've ever driven on this circuit. The downforce through carosel was awesome", said McMurry. "We're really looking forward to the next race at Mosport, which is even higher speed and even more downforce dependent." The next round of the American Le Mans Series is Mobil 1 presents the Grand Prix of Mosport at 3:05 p.m. ET on Sunday, August 30. The race will air live on SPEED. |
