Monterey, CA --- Autocon's Joe Geldert was named the P1 class Mechanic of the Year at the season-ending American Le Mans Series "Night of Champions" banquet. The honor carries special meaning since selections are made by the officials of IMSA, the body that governs the series events. "The officials, probably more than anyone else, get a firsthand look at who's busting their butts and contributing the most signficantly to their teams," said team owner Michael Lewis. "They see just about every mechanic from every team every race weekend. To be one of the class winners selected from the probably 200-300 mechanics on all the teams is huge." In a twist of fate, Geldert hadn't planned on attending the black tie event. Team officials found out about the award the night before, and then scrammbled with phony stories to keep Geldert in town for one more night. "It was crazy. I had to run out and get a wardrobe on Sunday. It threw my plans into a real tizzy, but it turned out to be well worth it. I really want to thank all the people at IMSA for recognizing me, although this is really an award reflecting the incredible efforts of our privateer and most volunteer crew," said Geldert. |
