Autocon Motorsports will take a trio of drivers to Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca with hopes of adding to their already admirable record in 2006. This aggressive privateer team has already reached the podium at Mid Ohio, Lime Rock and Miller Motorsports Park and is hungry to add to that total in the 4-hour Monterey Sportscar Championships October 19-21. "We really stepped up our game for this season when we acquired our Lola, a modern transporter and everything else needed to compete at this level," states team owner/driver Mike Lewis. "We achieved a lot of team firsts this season for which we are very proud. But getting to the podium is addictive and we want to do it again, soon. The four hour event at Laguna should serve us well as our car has very good reliability and our driver lineup is very experienced at this track." Joining Lewis behind the wheel this weekend will be veteran Bryan Willman, as well as John Graham who will be making a belated debut with Autocon after an early retirement at Mosport kept him out of the cockpit. "I am looking forward to Laguna and hopefully getting some dry track time in the Lola," said Graham, who is slated to compete in multiple races for Autocon in 2007, and who made his debut with the team during a rainy weekend in Canada at Mosport International Raceway. "These guys have proven they can complete with the big teams and that is why I signed on." Willman returns to the track where he first experienced driving a race car. "My racing career began at Laguna, and nearly ended there on several occasions," quipped the ever popular Willman. "This is such an adventurous track, but if you have any confusion about the need to eat lightly before driving a race car, the Corkscrew will make it all very clear to you. Seriously, I love this place and the twilight schedule makes for a great show for the fans. My goal is to help us see the checkered flag and hopefully another podium." Lewis places even more focus on this event. "It is always important to end a season on a high note and build momentum for next year. It is even more important for us as we are expanding to a two car team for 2007, another big step up for Autocon. This is also the closest we come to a home track and we look to put on a good showing for our fellow Californians." The final round airs live on SPEED at 2:45 p.m. PDT on Saturday, October 21. MotorsTV will broadcast the race in Europe starting at 10:30 p.m. UTC in England and 11:30 p.m. CET. American Le Mans Radio will have live coverage, and IMSA Live Timing & Scoring will be available at www.americanlemans.com. |
