The American Le Mans Series’ string of visiting true world class race venues continues this coming weekend with a traditional Labor Day weekend visit to Mosport International Raceway, home of the fastest ever single lap – 131 mph average speed – in series history until that mark was momentarily bested at Road America just weeks ago.
“Oh, we’re pretty Mosport will reign supreme again after this coming weekend. The cars have been faster on just about every circuit this season,” said team owner Mike Lewis. “Mosport is blindingly fast. A couple of the turns are true gut check corners. The Lola likes this type of environment, so we are looking forward to the event.”
Autocon will shift its driver lineup for the Sunday, Sept. 3 event by introducing John Graham to the lineup, co-driving with Chris McMurry. An Aurora, Ontario native, Graham feels very at home at Mosport since he has competed there in many series ranging from stock cars to sports cars.
“Mosport is one of the greatest tracks in the world. It is a real driver's track and the competition is always fierce from beginning to end,” Graham said. “I am looking forward to my return to the ALM and getting behind the wheel in front of my home town fans."
Graham, with seven 24 Hours of Le Mans under his belt as well as multiple ALMS starts, is competing in one race this season in preparation for at least five events in 2007 in the recently-announced second entry for Autocon in the P1 class, the top level of the series.
Co-driver McMurry, who scored a P2 class win at Mosport in 2003 and a second place in 2005, is equally-enthused about the 2.5-mile, 10-turn run through the hillsides one hour east of Toronto.
“The Lola, which sat on the pole last season at Mosport, is a great car to be in this weekend. It provides a lot of confidence in the remarkably high speed turns of this circuit where, as a driver, you really want to know the car is underneath you,” said McMurry. “The kink at Road America (the last race) was so something of a full-throttle no-brainer, and that was different than any other car I’ve ever been in. With that knowledge, I feel good about our chances this weekend.”
Lewis summed up the task for the upcoming weekend. “We got a wake up call last race at Road America. We did not put a great car on the track and our performance suffered a bit. I said after the event that we would learn and we have. I have had discussions with our engine partner AER and have developed a plan to be much more prepared for the Mosport event. It is a big race for us and we want to make our friends and fans proud.”
The race will be broadcast live on SPEED on Sunday beginning at 3 p.m. EDT. As usual, live time and scoring, as well as a live radio broadcast can be found at www.americanlemans.com.
